Time Of Our Lives
I wrote this musical valentine to my wife, Mary Belle, in 1982 and recorded it for “Hungry Nights”, a solo album I made for Arista Records that same year. As it happens, this weekend is our wedding anniversary and I thought it would be appropriate to rededicate it to her and share it with you. It’s in 3/4 time- a waltz- the most romantic of musical “feels” for my money.
Hope you like it and….. Happy Anniversary, MB!

Hello,Tom–I think “Time Of Our Lives” is amongst your best work–it’s almost Sondheimian(goofy term–hope it never gets used again.lol).I’m surprised that no one’s done a cover of this song after all these years(I might be wrong–someone might have).Anyhow, there’s a tune I don’t think you’ve added that’s once again up there with your best. It’d just be fantastic if you added it.It’s “I’ll Always Love You”.I think the first version of it was recorded by Michael Johnson.I like Melissa Manchester’s version a lot,but I find Johnson’s more authentic somehow. There’s something a little bit rigid–it’s very carefully produced.Johnson’s version has just a trace of rubato in there–at least something like that. The guitar has a certain flowing phrasing.Melissa’s version almost seems rushed,if you get me.Thanks again for the beautiful music and keep ’em comin’!
Thanks so much, Tony. “I’ll Always Love You” is one of my personal favorites. And I agree- I love Michael’s version. A really good musical fit for him. My co-writer was Eric Kaz, one of the best songwriters from that era. I’ll post it soon.
Cheers!
Tom
Stunningly achingly beautiful. I was thinking more of Cole Porter, but Sondheim will do. I love the plaintiff feel of the music against the fairy tale happiness of the music.
Thank you. Love you,
Patti
Thanks, Patti!
Congrats on so many wonderful years together.
Much love,
Tim and Jacqueline.
Hi Tom,
First of all….congratulations to you and Mary Bell….I hope that your happiness together is just as strong as it was in 1982 when you were inspired to write such a beautiful song….Marriages that long are rare today.
I like the words: “We are all that we need” …wow, fantastic! Mary Bell must have just melted when she heard those words…
God Bless,
Mike
So kind. Thanks Mike!
